The police in Groningen and Drenthe have confiscated approximately 4,000 kilograms of fireworks, including both permitted and prohibited types, as part of increased border controls due to the start of the firework sales season. While purchasing fireworks abroad is allowed, they must comply with Dutch regulations, which prohibit fireworks like bangers and rockets.
During the first day of sales on Friday, police reminded the public that they can only transport a maximum of 25 kilograms of consumer fireworks per car, irrespective of the number of occupants. This limit also applies to the total amount allowed per address.

For several years, neighboring towns Baarle-Hertog and Baarle-Nassau in Belgium have grappled withordes of Dutch citizens visiting to purchase fireworks. Local residents have expressed concerns about the volume of traffic and the litter left behind from wild fireworks, as stated by the mayor in an interview with VRT Radio 1 last year.
