Title: Italian Cardiologist Under Fire: No-Vax Backlash After Vaccine Refusal Policy Misunderstanding
TRIESTE, Italy – A misleading document, a bureaucratic blunder, and a national furor. Dr. Enzo Mazzaro, Director of Cardiochirurgia at Trieste’s Ospedale di Cattinara since 2021, found himself at the center of a storm after a no-vax patient’s social media post went viral. The post alleged that Mazzaro had denied surgery to an unvaccinated patient, leading to a torrent of insults and threats against him and his family.
The controversy escalated following an article in La Verità on December 24, titled "Non fai i vaccini? Allora niente operazione" (If you don’t get vaccinated? Then no surgery), which addressed the hospital’s policy. Mazzaro, overwhelmed by the backlash, decided to suspend himself.
The Azienda Sanitaria Universitaria Giuliano-Isontina (ASUi) hurried to clarify the facts. The patient in question had indeed been evaluated at the cardiochirurgical ambulatory in April 2021. A specialist had recommended vaccination to prevent associated risks, and the patient was repeatedly reminded of this. However, during a final telephone consultation on December 12, the patient expressed reservations about both vaccination and surgery. A routine letter was subsequently sent to confirm this refusal, focusing only on the vaccination aspect, which further fueled the misconception.
ASUi confirmed that the patient’s refusal to undergo the recommended vaccinations did not automatically bar them from surgery. The decision remains based on the patient’s refusal to undergo the procedure, and no patient has ever been denied treatment due to vaccination status alone.
Politicians have weighed in, with the Democratic Party (PD) leading the charge. Deputy and Justice Spokesperson, Debora Serracchiani, expressed solidarity with Mazzaro and condemned the threats, blaming the incident on years of attacks on science and medical professionals. She criticized the government’s handling of the pandemic and its leniency towards rule-breakers.
Diego Moretti, PD’s regional council’s capogruppo, also expressed solidarity with Mazzaro, deploring the escalation of intolerance and disrespect towards healthcare workers. Maria Luisa Paglia, PD’s provincial secretary, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need to combat disinformation and support healthcare professionals.
Mazzaro, meanwhile, has remained silent, leaving his legal counsel to handle the matter. The irony of the situation lies in the fact that the entire controversy stems from a misunderstanding, with both Mazzaro and the patient being exploited as pawns in the ongoing vaccine debate.
As sui seats back in its high position, one can only hope that the heat surrounding this issue will dissipate soon, allowing Dr. Mazzaro to resume his life-saving work in peace. The debate around vaccinations and pandemic management policies remains sensitive and contentious, highlighting the importance of factual, balanced communication in navigating these challenging times.
