Fighting Dengue Fever in Madiun: City Launches Fogging Operations to Control Spread
Madiun, East Java — The Health, Population Control, and Family Planning Agency (Dinkes PP dan KB) of Madiun City has deployed fogging operations, or insecticide spraying, to contain the escalating dengue fever (DF) outbreak in the area. This second phase of the fogging campaign targets the Kemiri Street district in Madiun’s Taman sub-district, aiming to eradicate the primary vector, the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
Sub-coordinator for Infectious Disease Control at Dinkes PP dan KB, Tri Wahyuning Novitasari, rubbished the necessity for this measure. "We’ve seen a significant increase in DF cases, with just 144 cases reported in 2023, but now we’re seeing over 500 cases in 2024," she said. "Fogging is a critical step in reducing these numbers by eliminating Aedes aegypti mosquitoes."
While fogging is underway, Novitasari also encouraged community involvement in the fight against dengue fever. She urged residents to actively participate in vector control strategies, including frequent inspections and clean-up of potential mosquito breeding sites such as water storage containers and flower pots.
"We’re hoping that our efforts, together with increased community awareness and participation, will effectively control the spread of dengue fever," Novitasari added. The city government plans to continue fogging operations in high-risk areas on a regular basis, particularly during the upcoming rainy season in early 2025. They also warned residents to remain vigilant and cooperative in the battle against this preventable disease.
