Kamperen soars in popularity across Europe
Andelst – Camping holidays are more popular than ever before. In 2024, bookings surged by 39% compared to 2023, while search queries for campings by European campers increased by 15%. This trend signals a continued preference for outdoor leisure activities and a growing demand for affordable and flexible travel options.
Markus Schreiber, spokesperson for the European Camping Federation, attributes this uptick to several factors. "Firstly, there’s a strong desire for outdoor experiences after the recent pandemic," he explains. "People are seeking nature and open spaces, which campings offer in abundance. Secondly, inflation and the subsequent rise in travel costs have made camping an attractive alternative to other forms of holiday accommodation."
The boom in kampeerens (Dutch for campings) is reflected in their occupancy rates. Sites across Europe have reported higher bookings and longer stays, with many campings fully booked during peak seasons.
Schreiber also notes the growing trend of "glamping," surrendering basic campers to luxury lodges and bell tents. This evolution caters to those seeking a more comfortable camping experience, further boosting the overall popularity of kampeerens.
While the 2024 figures are impressive, they build on an ongoing trend. Since 2020, kampeerens have seen steady growth in both bookings and searches, indicating a shift in European travel preferences.
To cater to this rising demand, camping operators are expanding their facilities. From additional pitches and upgraded amenities to increased investment in glamping options, the camping industry is eager to meet the surging interest.
As we look ahead, it seems clear that kampeerens will continue to dominate the European leisure scene. With their combination of affordability, flexibility, and outdoorsy appeal, there’s little wonder why more Europeans are choosing to kampen.
