Breaking News: Devastating 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Tibet; At Least 53 Dead, Over 60 Injured
A massive 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China on Monday, causing widespread damage and loss of life. As of the latest reports, at least 53 people have been confirmed dead and over 60 injured in the earthquake, which had a shallow depth of just 10 kilometers, making its effects even more devastating.
The earthquake, initially reported as a 7.4 magnitude, occurred at around 6:54 AM local time, with its epicenter located near the town of Kangxiwa in Nyingchi prefecture. The tremor was felt as far away as the capital city of Beijing, some 2,000 kilometers to the north.
The earthquake was followed by multiple aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from 5.1 to 6.1, creating panic and chaos among the residents of the affected regions. Pictures and videos emerging from the disaster zones show destruction and devastation, with numerous buildings reduced to rubble and people fleeing their homes in fear.
Many villagers have been left homeless, with thousands seeking refuge in temporary shelters set up by the authorities. The Chinese government has mobilized its resources and declared the earthquake a Level I emergency, the highest in the country’s emergency response system.
President Xi Jinping has issued instructions for all-out efforts to be made in rescue and relief operations, with the priority being the rescue of those still trapped under the rubble. Military and medical teams have been dispatched to the affected areas, and power, water, and communications networks are being restored.
The earthquake occurs barely a year after a 6.6 magnitude tremor struck the same region in March 2021, causing significant damage and loss of life.
