Headline: Major Roadworks Ahead: Burgas-Sarafovo Route to Close for Repairs
Subhead: Traffic rerouted via Northern Bypass; repairs set to complete by end of February
Burgas, Bulgaria – Starting tomorrow, the eastern lane of the Burgas-Sarafovo road will undergo repairs, an initiative announced by Burgas Municipality. This is the second phase of the project to rehabilitate the road section, with works expected to wrap up by February 28.
During this period, traffic heading from the city center to the coastal quarter of Sarafovo will be diverted through the Northern Bypass of Burgas and the roundabout at the University of Burgas. In the opposite direction, traffic will use the recently renovated western lane, adjacent to the cemetery.
Recall that in late 2024, Burgas Municipality secured ownership of the road section from the Road Infrastructure Agency. "The city is growing, and the need for us to have our own communication infrastructure is increasing. We’ve wanted to acquire ownership of these sections for years, but it wasn’t possible as they were state-owned highways. Now that the Northern Bypass has been constructed, it became possible for MMRB to transfer the road to the municipality, enabling us to maintain and plan repairs accurately," Burgas Mayor Dimitur Nikolov stated in a late 2024 council session.
Last year, road repairs began inauspiciously – during the peak summer season – causing driver discontent. The municipality successfully lobbied the Road Infrastructure Agency to repair only one lane, with the promise that the other would be tackled post-season. Extensive work on lighting and communication lines has been completed in the intervening months.
Drivers are advised to plan their routes accordingly and expect potential delays. The municipality will introduce temporary traffic arrangements to alleviate congestion. For more information on these changes, please visit the official Burgas Municipality website.
