Headline: Unanimous Vote: Bulgarian Parliament Committee Merges Bills to Block Borislav Sarrafov‘s Chief Prosecutor Bid
The parliamentary Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs unanimously decided in less than five minutes to combine three bills aimed at amending the Law on Judicial Authority, effectively blocking Borislav Sarrafov’s election as Chief Prosecutor. The committee approved the changes on a second reading, which will now proceed to the plenary session for further discussion.
On January 8, MPs approved three bills aiming to amend the Law on Judicial Authority during the first reading, all centered around the election of a new Chief Prosecutor. Two proposals, one from "Continuity-Democratic Bulgaria" (PP-DB) and another from "There Is Such a People" (ITN), were backed unanimously with 222 votes in favor. The proposal from "Revival" was supported by 193 MPs, with 28 votes against and none abstaining. The opposition against the "Revival" proposal came from MPs in the "BSP for Bulgaria" group.
The Supreme Judicial Council (VSS) is set to elect the new Chief Prosecutor on January 16, with Borislav Sarrafov, who has been acting in the role, being the sole candidate.
