Samsung Galaxy Phones Finally Receiving Google Play System Updates After Delay

After a significant delay, Samsung Galaxy phone and tablet users are finally receiving the January 2026 Google Play system update. The rollout, yet, isn’t happening simultaneously for everyone.

Recent History of Play System Updates

Reports surfaced in early December that Samsung devices were not receiving new Google Play system updates. This wasn’t an isolated incident, as similar delays have occurred in previous years. Expectations that updates would resume in January proved optimistic, with many Galaxy devices remaining on the August, July, or even June 2025 Google Play system update.

However, as of today, the situation has changed. A large number of phones are now receiving the January 2026 Google Play system update.

Note: Some users are reporting receiving the November update instead. The reason for this discrepancy is currently unknown.

How to Install the Update

To check for and install the Google Play system update, navigate to Settings > Security and privacy > Updates. Then, tap Google Play-systeemupdate to initiate the check. Most devices show an update size of around 74 MB, though some report sizes of 75 or 80 MB.

Which Devices Are Affected?

Whereas a comprehensive list isn’t available, the update has been confirmed on recent models across the Galaxy S, Z, and A series. Even the seven-year-old Galaxy S10 is receiving the update, albeit a smaller package of approximately 4 MB.

Security Updates Still Pending

As of this writing, the February security update has not yet been released for any Galaxy devices. It is anticipated that these updates will follow shortly, and the One UI 8.5 upgrade may also be released soon, potentially around the launch of the next Galaxy device.

(Thanks for the reports from Marinus, Bert, Jan, and Jos!)
