A man accused of starting a deadly fire in the Bronx earlier this month is now accused of intentionally setting the blaze, according to the FDNY.
The fire department announced Thursday that investigators determined the May 6 fire was “intentionally set with gasoline.” The suspect has been identified as Daniel Santana.
Details of the Mott Haven Blaze
The fire broke out shortly after 5 a.m. At a mixed-use building located at 2592 Third Ave. In Mott Haven. Authorities stated that firefighters encountered heavy flames on the building’s first and second floors and three people were killed.
Due to the intensity of the fire and concerns that the building could collapse, FDNY officials said crews were forced to switch to exterior operations.
Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore issued a statement on Thursday regarding the incident. “This heinous crime took the lives of three New Yorkers and endangered the lives of our first responders,” Bonsignore said.
Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation
Daniel Santana was arrested on Thursday. He currently faces several charges, including murder, manslaughter, arson, and reckless endangerment.

FDNY officials have stated that they have not yet determined a possible motive for the fire. Attorney information for Santana was not immediately available on Thursday.
Moving forward, the legal process is likely to focus on the specific charges of murder and arson. Investigators may also continue to search for a motive to provide further context for the prosecution’s case.
