Fewer than 2,000 yellow-crested cockatoos remain in the wild globally, but a population of roughly 200 birds thriving in Hong Kong’s urban parks may serve as a critical genetic reservoir for the endangered species, according to a study published in the international journal Evolutionary Applications.
Urban Refuges and High Genetic Diversity
Native to Indonesia and East Timor, the species has suffered steep population declines driven by habitat loss and heavy trapping for the pet trade, according to researchers from the University of Hong Kong (HKU). However, the roughly 200 yellow-crested cockatoos roosting in Hong Kong account for about 10 percent of the remaining global population.
Lead study author Astrid Andersson told Xinhua that this urban population retains unexpectedly high genetic diversity. “It could be functioning as a backup population for this species, which is critically endangered,” Andersson said.
Rather than hiding in rural landscapes, these snowy-white birds prefer bustling urban centers like Victoria Park in Causeway Bay and Hong Kong Park in Admiralty. Older, larger trees in these municipal green spaces provide natural nesting holes, while the surrounding environment supplies ample fruits, nuts, seeds, leaves, and flowers.

When teacher Winster Wong noticed a pair of cockatoos repeatedly pecking at a campus tree hole at St. Louis School in Sai Ying Pun last October, he contacted the HKU team. The school successfully installed two artificial nest boxes this April.
“We want the students to be involved in it, not just bystanders. At this stage, we are trying to increase their awareness,” Wong said.
Student involvement has yielded notable results. Fifteen-year-old student Rooney Cheung won an award in a competition themed around the environment and humanity by capturing an image of a cockatoo returning to an artificial nest box on campus. Another student, Owen Yu, built a block-model tree to simulate an ideal habitat, noting a shift in his personal interest in nature.
Climate-Resilient Nest Boxes and Real-Time Monitoring
The specialized nest boxes are engineered to withstand Hong Kong’s extreme rainfall and high temperatures while keeping out predators such as snakes and civet cats. Each box features a live camera to help researchers track metrics like egg counts, chick survival, and parental feeding habits.
While the strong beaks of the cockatoos occasionally damage the cameras and boxes, the monitoring tools provide unprecedented data. “This type of information has never been recorded for this species,” Andersson noted.
The live feeds also serve an educational purpose, with some classrooms streaming the footage via tablets. The project has already recorded a success: at least one chick has successfully hatched inside a nest box. Andersson aims to expand the initiative to roughly 50 boxes by partnering with more schools, corporations, and individuals.
