The Philadelphia Phillies made a major splash ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline, acquiring star infielder Luis Arraez and right-handed reliever Caleb Kilian from the San Francisco Giants, according to reports from USA Today and cbssports.com.
Phillies Acquire Three-Time Batting Champion Luis Arraez From Giants
In exchange, the Giants receive right-handed starter Ramon Marquez, the Phillies’ No. 4 prospect, along with relief pitcher Marty Gair. The trade comes as the Phillies seek an offensive boost, sitting tied for 28th in baseball with a .304 on-base percentage while averaging 4.38 runs per game. Arraez, a four-time All-Star and three-time batting champion, brings elite contact skills to Philadelphia, according to MLB.com. He is batting .324 this season with four home runs, 43 RBIs, and an .800 OPS across 464 plate appearances, striking out just 21 times.
Defensive Shifts and Infield Realignment in Philadelphia
The addition of Arraez will trigger a domino effect across the Phillies’ defensive alignment, according to Yahoo Sports. Arraez has insisted on playing second base throughout trade talks and is expected to fill that role in Philadelphia.
To accommodate the new infielder, the Phillies plan to implement several positional shifts. Bryce Harper is prepared to return to right field for the first time since suffering a right elbow injury in 2022, provided the team secured an offensive upgrade. With Harper moving back to the outfield, Alec Bohm is expected to shift from third base to first base, while Bryson Stott will move from second base to third base.
Trade Package Details and Giants’ Return
The headliner of the prospect package heading to San Francisco is Ramon Marquez, a 20-year-old right-hander who was ranked as the Phillies’ No. 4 prospect, according to CBS Sports. Marquez has pitched to a 3.00 ERA across two minor league campaigns, striking out 165 batters in 114 innings, and reached High-A this season.
Joining Marquez in the move to the Giants is Marty Gair, a 23-year-old right-handed reliever and former 13th-round draft pick who has recorded a 4.43 ERA with 106 strikeouts in 63 minor league innings. For the Giants, who are buried in the standings, the deal brings long-term pitching upside into their system. Meanwhile, Arraez is playing on a one-year deal carrying a $12 million salary that he signed with San Francisco on Feb. 10, 2026, and he is scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the season unless the Phillies extend his contract.
Bullpen Additions and Ongoing Deadline Search
Alongside the Arraez deal, the Phillies bolstered their bullpen by acquiring left-handed reliever Brooks Raley from the New York Mets, according to Delaware Online. In that transaction, the Phillies sent outfield prospect John Spikerman (ranked No. 27 in the system) and right-hander Luke Gabrysh to the Mets. Raley has posted a 5-5 record and a 1.96 ERA with 40 strikeouts in 41 1/3 innings this season.
Despite the double acquisition of Arraez and Raley, club executives continue to scour the market. According to USA Today, the Phillies remain active in their search for another veteran starting pitcher ahead of the 6 p.m. ET trade deadline.
