The San Francisco Giants traded veteran right-handed starting pitcher Tyler Mahle to the Atlanta Braves on Sunday night in exchange for reliever Anthony Molina. The deal, completed less than 24 hours before the 6 p.m. ET trade deadline on Monday, aims to provide rotation depth for Atlanta while allowing San Francisco to shed salary.
Atlanta Braves Rotation Needs and Financial Implications
The Braves pursued Mahle to stabilize a rotation depleted by significant injuries. Atlanta is currently playing without Spencer Strider, who is shut down for the season, and Reynaldo López, who recently landed on the injured list with knee inflammation. The team has also been without Spencer Schwellenbach all year, while depth starter Hurston Waldrep is currently awaiting a second opinion on an elbow injury.
Tyler Mahle’s Performance and Potential Adjustments
Mahle, 31, arrives in Atlanta after posting a 5.13 ERA across 18 starts for the Giants this season. Despite the high ERA, Braves president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos signaled that the team sees underlying potential in the veteran’s recent performance. Anthopoulos said, via MLB.com. We like what he’s done of late and we think there’s still some room for improvement with some other tweaks.
Mahle’s efficiency has improved since returning from a hamstring strain in late June. Over his last seven starts, he has recorded a 3.79 ERA, showing better control and strikeout rates than in his difficult April. The Braves hope to refine his pitch mix, particularly against right-handed hitters, to replicate the success he found with the Texas Rangers in 2025, where he posted a 2.18 ERA over 16 starts.
Anthony Molina Joins the San Francisco Giants
In exchange, the Giants acquired 24-year-old right-hander Anthony Molina. Molina, who previously pitched for the Colorado Rockies, was claimed by the Braves off waivers last offseason. He has appeared in three games for Atlanta’s major league team this season, allowing two earned runs over five innings.
The Giants have optioned Molina to their Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento. The move is viewed by industry observers as a salary-shedding effort for San Francisco, which is currently focused on retooling its roster for future seasons.

While the acquisition of Mahle addresses immediate depth issues, it remains unclear if Atlanta will make further moves before the final deadline.
