NYU Langone Health Named Among Top U.S. Hospitals in 2026-2027 Rankings
News & World Report honor roll, identifying it as one of the top 20 hospitals in the country. The 2026-2027 Best Hospital rankings, released Tuesday, evaluated healthcare facilities based on federal Medicare patient and procedure outcome data across specialties such as cardiology, oncology, and orthopedics. U.S. News & World Report assessed 505 regional hospitals to provide consumers with snapshots of quality, safety, and specialty care. Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of healthcare analysis at the publication, stated the goal is to help patients and providers make informed decisions about where to seek care. While these rankings offer a baseline, health advocates suggest a nuanced approach to using them. Patricia Kelmar, senior director of healthcare campaigns for the advocacy group PIRG, advises patients to look at trends over time rather than single-year results. Kelmar notes that rankings measure a combination of institutional factors—such as cleanliness and infection prevention—and the performance of individual physicians. Patients are encouraged to discuss these findings with their doctors when planning inpatient services.
Regional Performance and Hospital Competition
The New York healthcare landscape remains highly competitive, with several facilities earning high marks. NYU Langone’s high placement on the honor roll is attributed to its health outcome data, which was evaluated as one system due to a shared Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services certification number.
Dr. Joseph Greco, executive vice president and chief of hospital operations at NYU Langone Hospital-Long Island, credited the system’s use of real-time data for its patient outcomes and short lengths of stay. The system plans to further expand its footprint with a 500-bed hospital in Melville, which would be the first new hospital on Long Island since 1980.
Other major health systems also saw strong representation in the latest data:
- Northwell Health: Four of its facilities—Huntington Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, North Shore University Hospital, and South Shore University Hospital—ranked among the top 12 in New York. North Shore and LIJ took the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.
- Catholic Health: St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center in Roslyn secured a top-five position in the state, with high-performing ratings in over a dozen procedures.
- Mount Sinai South Nassau: The Oceanside facility earned high-performing ratings for conditions including colon cancer surgery and diabetes.
- Stony Brook University Hospital: The facility ranked 19th in the state, with high-performing evaluations in specialties like gynecological cancer surgery.
