New research shows that Tyrannosaurus rex hatchlings emerged from the egg at roughly the size of a house cat, weighing about 3.7 pounds, and immediately began actively hunting and moving rather than relying entirely on parental care, according to a study published in the journal Biology. Paleontologists examining microscopic foot bone fossils found evidence of rapid growth, extensive blood-vessel channels, and bone remodeling that indicate these apex predators were built for an active start to life.

The absence of growth rings confirmed the animal was less than a year old.
