Botanists have confirmed that Saxifraga candelabrum, a delicate wildflower growing on rocky mountain crevices in southwestern China, is a carnivorous plant that lures prey onto sticky hairs, digests their bodies, and absorbs their nutrients. According to research published in the journal Nature Communications, this discovery marks the first confirmed carnivorous plant within the 2,000-species taxonomic order Saxifragales, validating a hypothesis put forward by naturalist Charles Darwin in 1875.
Discovering Carnivorous Traits in Saxifraga candelabrum
The newly studied species grows on nutrient-poor rock faces across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Hengduan Mountains. Its range spans from central and northern Yunnan Province to southwestern Sichuan Province at elevations between 2,500 and 3,300 meters (8,200 to 10,800 feet). The plant features sticky reddish glandular hairs designed to trap small insects. To verify whether the plant actually consumes its catch rather than merely trapping them, researchers led by Hang Sun of the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Kunming Institute of Botany fed fruit flies enriched with a stable form of nitrogen to the plant. By tracking the nitrogen, researchers confirmed it moved directly into the plant tissues. Botanist and study co-author Douglas Soltis of the University of Florida noted that the highest concentrations of prey-derived nitrogen appeared in the flowers, which likely aids the plant’s reproductive output in a harsh environment.

Meanwhile, much smaller insects become permanently trapped, providing the plant with essential extra nutrients without disrupting successful pollination.
