The High-Speed Realities of the Eurofighter Typhoon
According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC News), the Eurofighter Typhoon is the fastest jet in Exercise Pitch Black, reaching top speeds exceeding 2,400 kilometres per hour. The aircraft can travel the speed of sound in just 30 seconds before climbing to a maximum height of 55,000 feet, which is double the height of Mount Everest.
Spanish Air and Space Force Captain Jaime Molina Cegarra told ABC News that flying the advanced aircraft involves managing intense physical demands. “We learn through our training how to calm those nerves, so they’re always there, but you concentrate and you focus and you push on,” Captain Cegarra said.
Training to become a combat fighter pilot required six years of preparation to handle extreme acceleration G-forces of up to nine times human body weight. According to Captain Cegarra, pilots perform specialized straining maneuvers to prevent blood from pooling in their legs during high-G turns.

ABC News reported that the lack of heavy commercial air traffic and city lights creates an environment where pilots can focus purely on tactical training.
“In the fighting airspace you don’t really have to worry about different altitudes or airliners coming in and out, which is a real big problem in Europe, given the air space is so saturated,” Captain Cegarra told ABC News. He also noted that flying over the desert at night presents unique challenges, requiring strict reliance on cockpit instruments.
Spain is one of 21 nations participating in this year’s Exercise Pitch Black, drawing aviation enthusiasts to Darwin to photograph the participating aircraft.
Aerobatic Displays and International Collaboration
Outside of tactical war games, Captain Cegarra performs aerobatic maneuvers with the Spanish Air and Space Force’s flying demonstration team. Following a low-level flyover at Mindil Beach, he expressed enthusiasm for the event’s public displays.
“I was enjoying it myself a lot from down at the beach, especially the flare dispenses, that was really cool,” Captain Cegarra told ABC News. “We don’t get to do that [kind of demonstration in Spain] and it’s always nice to see a sunset show, and the flares were just the cherry on top.”
Captain Cegarra also holds a personal connection to Australia, having spent three years studying at St Edmunds College in Canberra over a decade ago.
