Chinese Researchers Discover Ripple Structures in Milky Way

Chinese researchers at the Purple Mountain Observatory identified widespread corrugated structures in the Milky Way for the first time, offering fresh observational evidence to understand the galaxy’s three-dimensional architecture and dynamic evolution, according to a study published Aug. 7 in Nature Astronomy.

To capture these details, a research team analyzed more than 30,000 molecular clouds in three dimensions. According to Sun Yan, associate researcher at the Purple Mountain Observatory under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and first and co-corresponding author of the paper, the team used carbon monoxide spectral-line survey data collected by the observatory’s 13.7-meter millimeter-wave telescope.

The newly identified corrugations appear as large-scale vertical deviations of the disk, according to Sun. Researchers indicate these structures likely originate from bending waves excited by external gravitational perturbations.

“They may well be the ‘ripples’ propagating through the outer disk as a result of gravitational disturbances caused by satellite galaxies, such as dwarf galaxies, flying past the Milky Way,” Sun said.
