Houthi Seizure of Mocha Threatens Bab al-Mandeb Shipping Lanes

Al-Wasil characterized the attacks as part of a broader regional escalation threatening international shipping, urging the council to enforce relevant resolutions and halt external support enabling the offensive.
Speaking on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Bahraini Ambassador Jamal Fares Alrowaiei stated that the Mocha seizure compounded civilian suffering and threatened navigation in Bab al-Mandeb. Alrowaiei demanded strict accountability for perpetrators and stronger enforcement of existing arms embargoes and sanctions.
International Response and the Deepening Humanitarian Crisis
The United States joined international partners in condemning the Houthi offensive. American representatives accused Tehran of enabling the Houthi movement and demanded an immediate end to the attacks alongside the unconditional release of detained UN, humanitarian, and diplomatic personnel.
Parallel to the military escalation, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that food access is plummeting, classifying Yemen as a hunger hotspot of highest concern. OCHA estimates that 18.3 million people now face acute food insecurity. Among them, more than 2.2 million children under the age of five suffer from acute malnutrition, with over half a million classified as severe cases.
