Singer Ed Sheeran addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding his US Loop Tour during a solo performance in Philadelphia. Taking the stage alone at a Philadelphia sports stadium, the singer apologized to fans for making mistakes while managing the fallout from American rapper Macklemore being removed from the tour over pro-Palestinian remarks. Several other musicians resigned or dropped out of the tour following the debacle, leaving Sheeran to perform without opening acts.

The controversy led to declining ticket sales and dropped prices for the remaining US leg of the tour, with some ticket prices dropping to $32. Although fans reported being able to secure ticket refunds, Ticketmaster and concert promoter Messina Touring Group did not confirm whether reimbursements were being issued. Sheeran stated publicly that the decision to drop Macklemore was made by his promoters rather than himself, noting that he had spoken with venues at length during the week to try and build a bridge.
Addressing the Israel-Gaza Conflict Onstage
During his remarks at the venue, Sheeran spoke directly about his perspective on the political situation, noting that he had always tried to avoid acting as a political commentator so his shows could remain focused on unity and humanity. I never wanted to be an activist musician but this has put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about free speech and the most complex political issue on the planet,
he said. He described the events in Israel on October 7, 2023, as horrific and compounding centuries of Jewish pain, while characterizing the situation in Gaza as catastrophic, unjustifiable, and disproportionate. He also stated that his heart was broken by the scale of civilian and children’s losses, and added that the systemic injustice in the West Bank cannot be overlooked.
Outside the venue, a small crowd of about 50 demonstrators gathered to protest peacefully, waving Palestinian flags and chanting while police monitored the area for public safety needs. Despite the protests and security concerns raised by some ticketholders, hundreds of concertgoers streamed into Lincoln Financial Field as the event proceeded largely unfettered. Sheeran emphasized his commitment to his fans and maintaining his concerts as a safe space for everyone, noting that he is currently listening, learning, and trying to figure out how to make a contribution that helps victims of the conflict.
