Returning to Where It Started in 1976
The four-piece band performed in the yard at Mount Temple where they originally formed back in 1976. Larry Mullen had posted a notice seeking musicians on the school board half a century earlier. Alongside the vintage catalog, the group delivered the first live performance of their new single, “Silencio.” Later in the set, during a rendition of “One,” Bono brought out a cohort of young harpists, violin, and viola players. These young musicians were trained through the Music Generation program, a music education initiative co-funded by U2 alongside the Irish state.
Following loud chants of “one more tune” from the student audience, the band returned for an encore to play a re-arranged version of “With Or Without You.”

Roughly 1,000 current students watched the performance from the yard, waving homemade placards and cameras. “Thanks for showing up,” Bono told the teenagers during the set. “I suppose you’d nowhere else to go.”
