Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim returned to his family home in Cherok Tokun on Sept 25 to pay final respects to his elder brother, Idrus Ibrahim, who passed away peacefully in his sleep at age 83 from age-related illnesses.
Anwar Returns Home Following Official Visit to China
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim arrived at the family residence in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, at 11.05am accompanied by his wife, Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. The premier received the news of his brother’s passing while en route back to Malaysia after concluding a three-day official visit to China. According to a social media tribute, Anwar expressed deep sorrow at being unable to stand by his brother’s side during his final moments, remembering him as a lifelong companion who shared countless cherished memories.
Family, Dignitaries, and Well-Wishers Gather in Penang
A sombre atmosphere blanketed the neighborhood as hundreds of people, family members, and local dignitaries gathered to offer condolences. The second of eight siblings, Idrus Ibrahim leaves behind his wife, four children, and 10 grandchildren, having passed away at 5.30pm on Sept 24. At 11.15am, Raja Noora Ashikin Raja Abdullah and her husband, Penang governor Ramli Ngah Talib, arrived shortly thereafter to offer their condolences.
Other notable guests at the residence included Penang Mufti Mohd Sukki Othman, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong, Pantai Jerjak assemblyman Fahmi Zainol, Machang Bubuk assemblyman Lee Khai Loon, and Penang Umno chief Musa Sheikh Fadzir.
Funeral Rites Scheduled in Cherok Tokun
At the Cherok Tokun Bawah Mosque’s temporary prayer hall, funeral prayers will take place following Friday prayers. Following the prayers, Idrus Ibrahim will be laid to rest at the adjacent Cherok Tokun Bawah Muslim cemetery.
