Actress and entrepreneur Eva Longoria received $50 million from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos through the Courage and Civility Award. Fortune reported that the funding has driven Longoria to push back against the common belief that charitable impact requires immense personal wealth.
Eva Longoria Deploys $50 Million From Jeff Bezos
Longoria holds a net worth exceeding $80 million derived from business ventures like Casa Del Sol tequila, Hyphenate Media Group, a stake in Angel City FC, and an early investment in the John Wick franchise. She splits her philanthropic work between mentoring small business owners through a partnership with Lenovo and running the Eva Longoria Foundation, which she launched in 2012 to support educational and entrepreneurial opportunities for Latinas in the U.S. She also operates Eva’s Heroes, a charity serving young adults with intellectual special needs. Longoria told Fortune that the grant represents trust and responsibility rather than just scale.
This award has allowed me to continue investing those resources into the communities and causes I care deeply about—supporting Latina entrepreneurs, expanding access to education, and backing organizations that are driving real change on the ground,
Longoria said.
Jeff and Lauren Sánchez Bezos launched the Courage and Civility Award in 2021 to back individuals contributing significantly to society. Previous recipients include chef José Andrés, CNN host Van Jones, and Dolly Parton, who funded Moderna COVID-19 vaccine research. Retired Navy Admiral Bill McRaven, who oversaw the 2011 raid that killed Osama bin Laden, also received the award alongside Longoria and pledged his share to educational programs for future military leaders, children of deceased veterans, and mental health support for service members.
Philanthropy Without Billionaire Wealth
Liz Baker, CEO of Greater Good Charities, stated that society cannot wait for billionaires to resolve global issues. Her organization has distributed more than $1 billion across 121 countries since 2006. If everybody did something to help in their community, we wouldn’t have the issues that we have,
Baker told Fortune, noting that the misconception of giving as a grand, expensive gesture stops many people from participating.
Street-Level Mentorship Replaces Capital
Longoria argues that impactful change often occurs at the street level where financial capital is absent. Mentoring someone, supporting small business, sharing what you know—those things matter because not everyone has access to capital or resources, but anyone can be part of someone else’s support system,
she said. Baker echoes this sentiment, suggesting that individuals with limited time can commit one hour a week to local nonprofits that consistently require assistance.
