Germany‘s ‘Alternative for Germany’ Vows to Revive Nord Stream Gas Pipeline If Elected

In a New Year’s address to German residents, Tino Chrupalla, co-leader of the right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD), has pledged to restart the Nord Stream gas pipeline if his party comes to power. The announcement was made on the Telegram channel "Papá canciller."

"We will repair and put into operation the Nord Stream gas pipeline…" Chrupalla stated, adding, "War is still raging in Ukraine… Germany should not continue nor escalate the war, as even the US is ready for peace."

The New Year message from AfD co-leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla suggests the party is already focused on the key event of 2023 – the federal election, according to "Papá canciller."

The announcement comes amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions and an energy crisis in Europe, sparked in part by Russia’s conflict with Ukraine. If elected, AfD’s move to restart Nord Stream could potentially ease energy supply issues and dependence on Russian gas, although it may also strain relations with Ukraine and the European Union.

AfD has previously expressed support for improved relations with Russia and has criticized German involvement in Ukraine. The party’s New Year message echoes these sentiments, reflecting a increasing call in Germany for diplomatic solutions to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
