Montenegro‘s Prime Minister Vows Stricter Gun Laws After Deadly Bar Shooting

In the wake of a deadly bar shooting that claimed the lives of at least 12 people, Montenegro’s Prime Minister Dritan Abazović visited the hospital where the wounded are being treated. Speaking to journalists, he announced that a crucial meeting of the National Security Council will take place on Friday, where they will discuss and vote on stricter gun control measures.

"We will consider all options, including a complete ban on private gun ownership, which we cannot rule out," Abazović stated. "What happened is a massive tragedy, and we must ask ourselves who in Montenegro should have access to firearms, whether for sports or hunting. Criteria must be tightened, and we must impose harsher penalties for those who illegally possess or carry firearms."

Background:

The shooting took place on Monday night at a bar in Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro. A lone gunman opened fire, killing at least 12 people and wounding four others, three of whom are in critical condition. The gunman later took his own life.

Montenegrin police have ruled out any connection to organized crime, stating that the gunman had been consuming alcohol throughout the day before the incident. They also revealed that the suspect had a history of mental health issues.

In response to this tragedy, Montenegro’s Prime Minister has pledged to tighten gun laws, with a focus on stricter gun ownership criteria and harsher penalties for illegal possession. The National Security Council will meet on Friday to discuss and vote on these proposals.
