A Marathon Exception for Almgren
Andreas Almgren’s victory at the New York Marathon on November 1, 2026, has secured him a late-entry consideration for the 2027 Idrottsgalan. The Swedish Sports Academy confirmed the inclusion following a nomination meeting held this past Thursday evening.
The decision grants an exemption to the standard October 31 cutoff, a deadline typically strictly enforced for federations submitting nominations for the January ceremony. Academy regulations, however, provide the jury with flexibility to include significant achievements that occur in the window between that deadline and the final nomination meeting.
Jury chairman Lasse Granqvist signaled the likelihood of this move earlier in the week. “The jury can make exceptions if one feels the performance can be considered relevant in close time,” Granqvist told Expressen.
Strengthening a Gold-Medal Resume
This inclusion strengthens Almgren’s profile heading into the gala. He had already established himself as a primary contender for the “Male Athlete of the Year” award, buoyed by his gold medal performance in the 10,000 meters at the European Championships and his victory in the half marathon at the World Championships.
According to SVT Sport, the marathon win is now expected to be evaluated for the “Achievement of the Year” category as well. Beyond the Idrottsgalan, Almgren remains the favorite for the prestigious Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal, which is slated for presentation in early December.
Swedish Sports Academy Accepts Late Marathon Result
The Swedish Sports Academy’s decision rests on a regulatory provision designed to capture exceptional performances that fall just outside the traditional administrative calendar. By accepting the November 1 result, the academy ensures that Almgren’s recent marathon win is treated with the same weight as his earlier European and World Championship titles.
This late-stage inclusion marks a notable departure from the rigid October 31 deadline that previously governed the selection process for the annual sports honors.
