Democrats will control both the Senate and the House of Representatives after the 2026 midterm elections, securing majorities across Congress. NBC News projects that Democrats have won control of the House, with estimates indicating they will ultimately wind up with an 83-seat majority or at least 258 seats.
Of the 35 Senate races on the ballot, 33 have been projected so far, with 20 going to Democrats. Eight of those Democratic victories occurred in states that voted for President Trump in 2024, and voters in seven states flipped a previously Republican-held Senate seat to a Democrat. Meanwhile, Senate elections in Alaska and Mississippi remain toss-ups.

Democrats Flip Forty Seats to Capture House Control
To take control of the House, Democrats needed to gain three seats. NBC News projects that Democrats won control, with current figures showing 249 total Democratic seats after flipping 42 seats for a net gain of 40. Republican seats stand at 157, with 2 flipped. The NBC News Decision Desk model estimates that Democrats could ultimately reach a 259-seat majority or at least 258 seats based on past and current vote counts. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis called the results an extinction-level event for Republicans across the country.
Democrats Secure Senate Control with Wider Average Margins
Control of the Senate was also decided in favor of Democrats, who won 20 of the 33 projected races out of 35 total on the ballot. In fact, in states where Democrats won Senate races in the 2026 midterms, average margins were twice as large as Harris’ winning margins in the 2024 presidential election. Conversely, Republicans’ average winning margins were half as large as Mr. Trump’s 2024 margins. In West Virginia, Republican incumbent Sen. Shelly Moore Capito won by about 20 points, cutting Mr. Trump’s 2024 winning margin in half. In Florida, GOP Sen. Ashley Moody won reelection by just 3 points compared to Mr. Trump’s 13-point win in 2024. Trump won in 2024 by more than 30 points.

Democratic Committee Expands Voter Protection While Musk Funds Republicans
The Democratic National Committee pursued a strategy under its chair to organize and compete everywhere. The DNC also expanded voter protection programs from five states to 37, and its legal team won injunctions against both of Trump’s executive orders on elections. Meanwhile, Elon Musk spent roughly $446 million to elect Republicans, which included $158 million directed through a Senate super PAC to support Ken Paxton in Texas.
