Title: Arrested: Medical Doctor Resists Police After Causing Accident
In a turn of events that has shocked the usually peaceful Valle d’Aosta region, a prominent local physician found himself on the wrong side of the law on New Year’s Day. Federico Pretti, a 47-year-old neurochirurgien from Piedmont, was arrested after he caused a car accident and then resisted police efforts to administer an alcohol test.
The incident occurred in Saint-Pierre, a few kilometers from the regional capital, Aosta. Pretti, who works as the chief of neurochirurgia at the Ospedale Parini in Aosta, was driving his vehicle when he collided with the car ahead of him. The two young women in the other vehicle sustained minor injuries and were promptly taken to the hospital.
When police arrived on the scene, they found Pretti to be uncooperative and aggressive. Rather than comply with the officers’ request to take an alcohol breath test, he reportedly became belligerent, directing insults and threats towards the law enforcement officers. As a result, Pretti was arrested on the spot.
Despite the gravity of the situation, Pretti was later released pending trial. His lawyer, Federico Fornoni, commented on the decision, saying, "The judge found no need for preventive detention, which will allow us to examine the case file during the period assigned for our defense." The next hearing is scheduled for March 25.
Pretti is well-known and respected in the Valle d’Aosta medical community. A graduate of universities in Torino and France, he has made significant contributions to the region, including helping to prevent the closure of the neurochirurgia department at the Ospedale Parini. Just last month, his team successfully performed a complex brain tumor surgery, utilizing an innovative titanium implant for facial reconstruction.
The arrest of such a prominent figure has sent ripples through the local community, with many expressing shock and disbelief at the turn of events. While Pretti maintains his innocence, the police have confirmed that they will press charges for resisting arrest and causing injury by negligent driving.
As the legal process unfolds, the medical community and the public await further details on the incident, hoping that justice will be served swiftly and fairly.
