Archaeologists Find Denisovan Fossils and Tools in China’s Bianfu Cave

Archaeologists excavating Bianfu Cave in China’s Yunnan Province have discovered Denisovan fossils and cultural remains spanning a period from 190,000 to 70,000 years ago.

An abandoned quarry in southwestern China has yielded an unprecedented portal into the Stone Age, offering scientists a rare window into the lives of the mysterious ancient human lineage known as Denisovans. Excavations at Bianfu Cave in Yunnan province have uncovered thousands of artifacts, mammal bones, and human fossil fragments that reveal how these archaic humans thrived in forested environments over tens of thousands of years.

First identified in 2010 from genetic material extracted from a Siberian finger bone, Denisovans remain among the most elusive groups in human evolution. Because complete skeletons have never been recovered, researchers have relied on scattered fragments, teeth, and jawbones discovered across Asia to map their territory. The new excavations at Bianfu Cave change that picture by pairing human fossils directly with a rich archaeological record.

Protein Analysis Identifies Denisovan Remains in Bianfu Cave

When excavation work began at the Yunnan quarry site in 2019, researchers faced a major puzzle. The region is well-known as a geographical zone where Denisovans and modern humans are understood to have intermingled and mated, leaving high concentrations of Denisovan DNA in the genomes of populations in Papua New Guinea and nearby islands. Because both human lineages populated the landscape, finding stone tools inside a cave did not immediately reveal who made them.

To identify the bone fragments recovered alongside the artifacts, scientists turned to advanced laboratory techniques. Researchers employed zooarchaeology by mass spectrometry (ZooMS), a high-throughput protein analysis method that extracts collagen from bone fragments and compares the resulting pattern against known references.

Out of thousands of mammal bones, three fragments matched the collagen profile of the genus Homo. Further proteomic screening isolated specific amino acid variations that linked two teeth and three bone pieces directly to Denisovans. According to Nature, the identified remains include two curved wedges of skull, a portion of a lower arm bone, and two teeth.

The fossils were recovered from two distinct sediment layers, indicating that the archaic humans inhabited the region across an extended timeframe between 167,000 and 134,000 years ago. Stratigraphic analysis of the broader cave deposit indicates human activity at the site stretched from 190,000 to 70,000 years ago.

Unprecedented Forearm Bone Reveals Unique Biomechanical Adaptations

Among the most significant finds from the Yunnan cave is a radius fragment, representing one of the very few Denisovan limb bones ever discovered below the head. Prior to the Bianfu Cave project, researchers had studied almost exclusively teeth and skull pieces, alongside a single finger bone and rib fragment from Siberia.

The newly analyzed radius features a large head where it connects to the humerus at the elbow, bearing similarities to Neanderthal anatomy. However, its overall geometric shape aligns more closely with modern human radii. Researchers noted that these structural features pointed to specific physical capabilities.

These distinct skeletal traits suggest that the Denisovans residing near the cave faced unique biomechanical demands and developed behavioral adaptations distinct from other human relatives of the era.

Stone Artifacts and Animal Butchery at Bianfu Cave

Alongside the human fossils, the excavation uncovered nearly 1,400 stone artifacts and more than 64,000 mammal bones. Approximately 200 of the stone items were flake tools crafted primarily from local sedimentary rock known as sandy mudstone.

Cut marks left on a large share of the animal bones indicate that the cave’s inhabitants regularly hunted and butchered large game, including cow- and deer-like animals, and extracted marrow for sustenance. The tool assemblage recovered from Bianfu Cave differs notably from the more complex stone technologies produced by Neanderthals during the same chronological window.

Archaeologists emphasize that the site offers a rare continuous record of ancient human behavior. As noted by the University of Washington researcher Ben Marwick, who was independent of the study, the cavern represents the first location providing a long, rich sequence of cultural behavior uniquely tied to Denisovans.
