With the arrival of the second winter storm of the 2024-2025 season and the approach of Cold Front Number 21, the Mexican government is calling on authorities and the public to step up safety measures. Temperatures are expected to drop significantly, and snow, sleet, and freezing rain are forecast in various states across the country.
The Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) has issued warnings for minimum temperatures ranging from -1 to 1°C in cities like Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, and Durango, and from 0 to 8°C in Tijuana, Baja California, among others. localities. Starting January 7, temperatures will further decrease, with values ranging from 0 to -4°C in several regions, including Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, and Durango. The Comisión Nacional del Agua (Conagua) and the Coordinación Nacional de Protección Civil (CNPC) are urging the public to take precautions, such as staying informed through official sources, dressing in layers, consuming hot beverages to maintain body temperature, and covering the nose and mouth when exiting warm environments to avoid sudden temperature changes. They also advise against leaving home unless necessary and to avoid crossing rivers, streams, and low-lying areas prone to flooding.
The SMN recommends that drivers exercise extreme caution, as roads may become icy and visibility could be reduced due to snow, sleet, or freezing rain. Pedestrians should also be cautious, as slips and falls can occur due to slippery surfaces.
This winter storm is expected to affect multiple states, including Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas. Residents in these areas are advised to take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this period of extreme cold.
