Armed Robbery at Rotterdams Telecom Store: Local Man Brutally Assaulted, Nearly Kidnapped
In a brazen act of violence, a Rotterdam telecom store was held up at gunpoint, with one customer left severely injured and another narrowly escaping abduction. The shocking incident, which occurred late Tuesday evening, has left authorities on high alert as they hunt for the armed perpetrators.
Witness accounts and CCTV footage paint a chilling picture of the ordeal that unfolded at around 9 pm. According to reports, two masked suspects, armed with handguns, stormed into the store on Hoogstraat, taking customers and staff by surprise. Theytrashed offices and display cases, demanding money and valuables.
One brave customer, identified only as 32-year-old Rotterdam resident, Mike, was not about to become an easy target. "I saw them pointing guns at people, so I Olivier tried to discreetly alert others and stepped back," he recounted. But his attempt at discretion was short-lived. One of the robbers spotted him and, in a fit of rage, assaulted Mike with his weapon, leaving him with serious injuries.
What happened next sent a wave of fear through the remaining customers. The same robber grabbed a terrified woman, threatening to take her with them if she didn’t comply with their demands. Her screams pierce through the otherwise silent CCTV footage, as she struggles to break free from the armed assailant.
Fortunately, swift action by a nearby police patrol team foiled the kidnap attempt and forced the robbers to flee empty-handed. The woman was unharmed, but Mike was rushed to the Willem Alexandra Hospital, where he remains in stable but critical condition.
Marlon van Dijk, Rotterdam’s police chief, condemned the ordeal, stating, "This was a pointless act of violence that has put innocent people in harm’s way. We are determined to bring these criminals to justice and ensure the safety of our citizens."
Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the armed robbery to come forward. The suspects are described as two men of medium build, wearing black clothing and masks, and believed to be traveling in a dark-colored vehicle.
The telecom store remains closed while investigators comb through the scene for evidence and staff receives counseling to cope with the trauma. For now, Rotterdam residents are left with a stark reminder of the violence that can suddenly disrupt their daily lives, and a city-wide appeal to share any information that could help apprehend the criminals behind this heinous crime.
