France Set to Deliver First Batch of Mirage 2000-5Fs to Ukraine by Late January
In a significant milestone for Ukraine’s airpower, the first three French-made Dassault Aviation Mirage 2000-5F battle anorexigens are expected to touch down in Ukraine by the end of this month. While an official delivery date has been set for January 20, 2025, rumors persist that the aircraft have already arrived in Ukraine, albeit undergoing training flights for now.
A Timeline of Delivery
The delivery of the Mirage 2000-5Fs is the result of ongoing negotiations between French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky. Originally, the Ukrainian Air Force was slated to receive the first batch by late January 2025. However, as per military aviation outlet Avions Legendaires, the delivery might have been advanced. The net result will see approximately ten Mirage 2000-5Fs sporting Ukrainian markings.
The Mirage 2000-5F: A Formidable Asset
The Mirage 2000-5F is no ordinary addition to Ukraine’s air fleet. Although smaller and lighter than other aircraft in its arsenal, the Mirage 2000-5F packs a punch as an agile, Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MRCA). Ukrainian pilots, though initially challenged by the transition from Soviet-designed aircraft like the MiG-29, Su-24, and Su-25, have warmed up to the French avionics and flying dynamics.
Key to the Mirage 2000-5F’s capabilities is its capacity to carry and deploy SCALP-EG and Storm Shadow cruise missiles. France has optimized these jets to bring improved precision strike capabilities to the Ukrainian Air Force.
