BC Family Rescues Exhausted Baby Bear Swimming in Okanagan Lake

Christina Zamniuk reported that she and her family were boating between their Vernon lakehouse and Adventure Bay last weekend when they noticed the young cub in the middle of the lake. Recognizing that the animal was exhausted and fighting to keep its head above water, the family immediately reached out to the B.C. Conservation Service for guidance on how to handle the situation.

The Rescue Operation on Okanagan Lake

While waiting for instructions, the family took matters into their own hands to save the drowning animal. They managed to secure a rope around the bear and hoisted the cub—which they affectionately named Boo Boo—onto the boat so it could warm up, as detailed by Zamniuk.

“His little nose was going under,” Zamniuk told Global News. “He was blowing bubbles. His little back legs were not moving anymore. He was just paddling with his front and he was just exhausted. So we got him in there… We got him on the boat. He was shivering, shaking, he was absolutely terrified.”

The family kept the cub on board for roughly an hour to help it recover from the intense cold and exhaustion. Following further instructions from the B.C. Conservation Service, they steered the boat close to the shore. With a gentle nudge, the bear successfully climbed onto land and wandered away.
