"Every year, we witness accidents caused by fireworks, both among adults and children," said Jan Spooren, spokesman for the VVSG. "It’s high time we take action to prevent these incidents."
While some mayors are eager to enforce local bans, organizing such a restriction presents its own set of challenges. It remains unclear whether municipalities would have the autonomy to impose their own regulations or if a national decree is needed. Additionally, enforcement would require increased police presence and intervention, which could strain already stretched resources.
The proposed ban finds support among various political parties, with Groen and Vlaams Belang echoing calls for tighter control over fireworks. However, Kamerlid Joeries Van haeren of the VVD argues that a ban would not address the root problem, as illegal fireworks could still be imported from abroad.

Organized public displays, for instance, would offer a safer and more inclusive way to ring in the new year. Meanwhile, some municipalities are considering softer measures, such as promoting ‘quiet fireworks’ or limiting the sale of fireworks to specific periods of the day. These alternatives could help mitigate the noise pollution and late-night disturbances caused by prolonged fireworks use.
