While the federal biosecurity response has drawn praise from conservation advocates, funding dedicated specifically to wildlife resilience has lagged. Gough called for an immediate emergency investment of $200 million separate from standard biosecurity measures. “We won’t be able to stop bird flu spreading through wildlife, so the best response to that needs to be dealing with all the other threats,” Gough said, citing the need to manage foxes, cats, rats on islands, and wetland connectivity.
Regarding vaccination strategies, Minister Watt explained that practical limitations prevent widespread immunization of wild birds. “It requires two doses of vaccines, and it’s hard enough to catch these birds once, let alone twice to give them a booster, so realistically it’s not possible to vaccinate native birds,” Watt said. However, he confirmed that trials are currently underway to assess whether vaccination is viable for captive birds in zoos and specialized breeding facilities.
