Fierce Blaze Strikes Apartment Block in Sofia; Elderly Man in Critical Condition
Sofia, Bulgaria: A significant fire engulfed an apartment building in the Ovcha Kupel district of Sofia earlier today, leaving one elderly man in critical condition, and displacing dozens of residents, according to sources from btvnovinite.bg, DarikNews, SEGA, OFFNews, and Dnes.bg. The fire also claimed the lives of four pets.
The blaze, reported around noon, quickly escalated, involving multiple firefighting units battling through thick smoke. The state of the man, in his 90s, is fragile, as he sustained heavy injuries trying to escape his burning home. He’s currently admitted to a critical care unit, awaiting immediate surgery. Authorities, however, have yet to confirm any other injuries at this stage.
Witnesses narrated the shocking scene of residents, particularly the elderly and children, fleeing the building, choking from the dense black smoke billowing from its doors and windows. Emergency responders swiftly closed off nearby roads, guiding traffic away from the devastated scene.
