Agriculture minister Caroline van der Plas, leader of the splinter party BBB, lamented this transformation, claiming the flag was "hijacked" by conspiracy theorists. Yet, her own actions provide a different narrative.
Van der Plas acknowledged that while the flag initially represented the despair and frustration of farmers and others, it was eventually "taken over" by other groups. She attributed this to the growing association of the flag with anti-government movements, lamenting the symbol’s negative shift. However, her role in spreading conspiracy theories cannot be discounted. Notably, during a parliamentary debate on nitrogen, she accused scientist Leen Hordijk of serving as a mouthpiece for the minister. Her unapologetic promotion of such theories contributed to the flag’s transformation.
CDA MP Derk Boswijk took to social media platform BlueSky to challenge Van der Plas’ account, arguing that her actions had directly contributed to the proliferation of conspiracy theories. He shared footage of a 2021 protest where Van der Plas suggested the government’s true aim was to seize farmland for real estate development. Boswijk highlighted the irony of Van der Plas’ reclamation of innocence, given her past actions.
The shift in the flag’s meaning is symptomatic of broader anti-government sentiment in the Netherlands, with valid grievances (Groningen mudslide, benefits scandal, etc.) exacerbating the divide. However, political figures like Van der Plas have also capitalized on this discontent, peddling conspiracy theories to maintain support. While this may offer short-term gains, ultimately, the truth prevails and only further alienates citizens.
