Ex-minister’s Corruption Case Spotlights Controversial PBI Benefit after Lengthy Jail Sentence
JAKARTA, Indo conocimiento (Jawa Pos – для Вас) — The corruption case involving Harvey Moeis, the former Minister of Mines and Energy, continues to draw public attention, six and a half years after he was sentenced to six years in prison by the Corruption Court in Jakarta. The reason? The mismanagement of tin resources under his watch resulted in a staggering loss of Rp 300 trillion to the state coffers.
Harvey Moeis’ sentence was far lower than the prosecution’s demand of 12 years imprisonment, leaving many questioning the verdict. One such topic of interest has been the health insurance status of Moeis and his wife, Sandra Dewi, particularly their alleged enrollment in the BPJS PBI program.
BPJS PBI, or the Premium Health Insurance for the Poor, is a social safety net initiative designed for Indonesia’s lower-income and vulnerable populations. Enrollees in this program receive coverage without any premium contributions, with the costs fully borne by the state.
The head of BPJS Kesehatan’s Public Communications, Rizky Anugrah, confirmed to Jawa Pos that both Moeis and Sandra Dewi were indeed recipients of the BPJS PBI program. Their inclusion was based on a decision by the Jakarta Provincial Government.
"The results of the data check show that the candidates are in the PBPU segment (the old nomenclature for PBI APBD) of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government," Rizky explained. He clarified that the criteria for BPJS PBI recipients need not be confined to the ‘poorest of the poor,’ but can be extended to entire districts that have not yet been enrolled in the National Health Insurance program and are willing to accept coverage of the third class.
Under the BPJS PBI scheme, the government fully finances the premiums, providing beneficiaries with tier-3 health coverage. This classification also includes individuals not remunerated for their labor. The list of beneficiaries is reportedly updated regularly, using the Data Terpadu Kesejahteraan Sosial (DTKS) compiled by the Ministry of Social Affairs.
