A strong windstorm is sweeping into North Norway this weekend, with gusts reaching 28-33 m/s from the southwest and winds picking up to gale force (8 on Beaufort scale) along the coast. The Meteorological Institute has issued a warning covering an area from Lofoten to Sandnessjøen, with high winds expected to intensify throughout Sunday morning and peak by 3 PM. Heavy rain and wet snow are also forecasted, transitioning into slush and snow showers in the afternoon.

Travel Disruptions Expected

Ferry and bus services, as well as flights, may be cancelled due to the severe weather. In Helgeland, two critical ferry crossings along the scenic Kystriksveien (Fv 17), Nesna-Levang and Kilboghamn-Jektvik, have already been suspended. Motorists planning long drives should check 175.no for real-time updates before departure. Additionally, keep in mind that E6 over Saltfjellet was temporarily closed Sunday morning due to heavy snowfall but reopened for convoys at 10 AM.

Snow Avalanche Risk

Due to the falling snow line and heavy rainfall, a significant snow avalanche risk is expected across Helgeland from Monday. Travelers in mountain areas and other exposed locations are warned to avoid steep slopes with loose snowpack.

Live Wind Updates

As of now, wind speeds are approaching 20 m/s near Helgelandsbrua, according to a webcam installed by Statens vegvesen. Prepare for strong gusts, secure loose outdoor items, and ensure doors and windows are well-sealed. Avoid unnecessary travel to exposed areas.

Wind Strength Updates

While the strongest winds may not meet initial predictions, Petter Ekrem, a meteorologist at Rana Blad, reassures that the situation remains hazardous.

"Though winds may not reach previous estimates, it’s still going to be quite gusty," he said.
