Britain and France will lead a multinational military rehearsal in Poland this month, preparing nearly 3,000 personnel from 12 European nations to deploy to Ukraine if a peace deal is reached.
Poland Prepares for European Rehearsal Deployment
Nearly 3,000 military personnel from 12 European nations are heading to neighboring Poland this month to rehearse a multinational deployment in the event of a peace deal in Ukraine. Britain and France are leading the exercise, which tests the ability of a reassurance force to mobilize quickly once active combat concludes.
Plans for the multinational unit were initially established last year as part of long-term security guarantees proposed by European nations. While the United States has participated in discussions surrounding the initiative, American forces are not contributing to the mission.
Operational Limits and Rules of Engagement
Western officials have outlined strict parameters for the multinational force, emphasizing that deployed troops will not participate in offensive operations, ceasefire monitoring, or traditional peacekeeping missions. They also will not operate on the front line or fall under NATO command.
Instead, the stated purpose of the presence is to provide stability, offer reassurance to Kyiv, and assist in rebuilding Ukraine’s armed forces. Questions remain regarding how the deployment will function in practice, and officials have declined to detail specific rules of engagement if international troops face attacks, though they maintain the force retains the right to defend itself.
Moscow Opposition and Leadership Statements
Russia has consistently opposed foreign troops operating inside Ukraine, with President Vladimir Putin warning last year that such personnel would be treated as legitimate targets

Despite Moscow’s warnings, British defense leadership insists the preparations demonstrate tangible commitment from allied nations. UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting emphasized that the exercises mark a concrete shift from planning to operational readiness.
This is not a hypothetical plan, it’s a real force, ready to help Ukraine once the fighting stops.

Lt Gen Tom Bateman, the UK commander of the Multi National Force – Ukraine (MNF-U), described the Poland drills as a crucial bridge between political promises and military capability. He called the unit a real, capable, readily deployable force that represented a serious commitment from Coalition of the Willing nations to Ukraine’s long-term stability and security
