British and European forces may use force in self-defense in Ukraine

British military personnel and their European allies will have the right to use force in self-defense if attacked by Russian forces, in the event that a mission is deployed in Ukraine. A source familiar with the planning stated that the multinational contingent would defend its personnel against any aggression. The risk of direct confrontation between the United Kingdom and Russia highlights the high stakes of the potential troop deployment led by Britain and France, though whether the operation will ever materialize remains under serious doubt due to a very large factor in Vladimir Putin, as Sky News comments, since it would require Russia's war in Ukraine to stop and a "peace" to be established before considering the deployment of the Multinational Forces for Ukraine (MNF-U) heading to the country at the invitation of the Ukrainian government. The Coalition of the Willing is an international alliance including Great Britain, France, Germany, Canada, Australia, the Baltic states, Poland, Slovenia, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and other countries, totaling over 30 nations, which was established in March 2025 to provide long-term military and strategic support to Ukraine.

Exercise Koalicja Tests Deployment in Poland

Preparations for the mission have triggered a major military exercise named “Koalicja,” which runs from November 9 to November 22 in Poland. The drill involves 2,800 military personnel from 11 participating nations, specifically in Nowa Deba in southeastern Poland near the border with Ukraine, according to Le Monde, to test the command system and logistical procedures related to the movement of equipment and personnel across Europe. France is the largest participant with troops, deploying personnel from its 1st Division, while the United Kingdom has deployed 300 soldiers from the 7th Light Mechanized Brigade, also known as the Desert Rats. Alongside the United Kingdom and France, the 10 countries participating in the exercise according to the UK Ministry of Defence are France, the UK, Estonia, Lithuania, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Belgium, and Poland, with Turkey also included in the 11 nations. General-Lieutenant Tom Bateman, commanding the forces, stated that the goal is to provide Ukraine with “reliable and binding security guarantees, once military operations stop,” adding that the forces will be “increasingly prepared every day” to support Ukraine when combat operations end, and noting that the exercise demonstrates military readiness, rapid deployment capabilities, and the capacity for effective actions.

Exclusion of U.S. Systems and Starlink Dependence

The multinational contingent will not rely on American military technology, notably the Starlink satellite network. Western officials explicitly noted that the forces do not depend on United States systems. This caution follows an incident last month when the United States restricted Ukraine’s use of the military version of Starlink, known as Starshield, for approximately 10 days, impacting missions involving mid-range drones. United States President Donald Trump previously stated that he would not send American troops to Ukraine for a peacekeeping mission, even if an agreement for a long-term ceasefire is reached.

Demining and Air Patrols Away From The Frontline

The plan envisions western military units positioned at a distance from the frontline to assist in the recovery and strengthening of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the post-war period. Despite these conditions, western officials acknowledge the risk of armed incidents, drawing comparisons to low-intensity attacks during the 2014-2022 truce period. European fighter jets will patrol the airspace, while Turkey will lead efforts for the demining of the Black Sea. The Coalition of the Willing was established in March 2025 to provide long-term military and strategic support to Ukraine.
