Headline: German Wealth Hits Record High in 2024 Despite Economic Turmoil
In a surprising turn of events, Germans have significantly increased their wealth in 2024, despite various global economic challenges. DZ Bank, Germany‘s second-largest bank, reveals that Germans have accumulated a staggering 9.3 trillion euros ($10.1 trillion) in total assets, a 6% increase from the previous year. This marks a new record and underscores the German citizens’ financial resilience.
Stock Market Gains and Savings Drive Growth
The surge in wealth can be attributed to positive returns from stocks and increased savings. The DAX, Germany’s blue-chip stock market index, climbed by nearly 19% in 2024, contributing over 200 billion euros ($218 billion) to Germans’ overall wealth. Notably, around 20% of Germans’ capital is invested in equities.
Germans Remain Keen on Saving
While the stock market performance is commendable, the most significant factor driving wealth growth is Germans’ renowned thriftiness. The savings rate in 2024 stood at 11.5%, the second-highest level since World War II and only slightly below the peak reached during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.
Economists at DZ Bank suggest that Germans’ cautious approach to spending is a response to inflation fears, energy policy uncertainties, and the political transition in Germany.
Cash and deposits remain the most favored savings options, accounting for 37% of total savings. Life insurance also proves popular. Deutsche Bank estimates that Germans earned around 30 billion euros ($33 billion) from deposits alone.
Optimistic outlook for 2025
Looking ahead, Germans are expected to further increase their wealth, albeit at a more moderate pace. DZ Bank forecasts a 4% growth in total wealth to 9.8 trillion euros ($10.7 trillion) in 2025, as Germans are predicted to save less and generate lower returns from investments.
However, even in 2025, Germans will likely remain committed to saving. According to Statista, 55% of Germans aim to save more in the coming year, indicating that the culture of thriftiness will endure.
