Traffic conditions fluctuated significantly over the first forty-eight hours. Drivers arriving Friday afternoon around 3 p.m. were told it would take three hours and 20 minutes to reach the gate for ticket inspection, which was an improvement of five hours of waiting for those who arrived at 2 p.m., Burning Man officials said on social media. By Sunday at noon, the wait to get to the gate was 8 hours and 20 minutes. Weather Disruptions and Dust Storms on the Access Road
Nature added its own challenges to the opening days. Rain showers moved through the area earlier in the day on Friday, but cleared up by midday and did little to reduce the amount of blowing dust. Gusty winds buffeted waiting vehicles and attendees got their first taste of the dust as they scurried to portapotties set out along the entrance road.
Fortunately, the heavy weather stayed brief. Clear skies and sunny conditions dominated the forecast, with daytime temperatures reaching highs in the mid to high 80s on Sunday and Monday. The National Weather Service forecast for the Black Rock Desert listed Saturday, Aug. 29, as sunny and clear with winds 10-15 mph in the afternoon and evening, a high near 87, and a low of 52. Sunday, Aug. 30, was forecast as sunny and clear with a calm wind, a high near 83, and a low around 53. Monday, Aug. 31, was forecast as sunny with a high near 88 and a low around 54. Tuesday, Sept. 1, was forecast as sunny, turning partly cloudy in the evening with a high near 83 and a low around 49. Wednesday, Sept. 2, was forecast as sunny, partly cloudy in the evening with a high near 81 and a low around 49. The event officially opened to participants at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 30.

Burning Man officials said.
“We know you want to experience the dusty playa as soon as you can, but if you can arrive Tuesday or later, you will find your wait time to be much shorter.”

For those unable to delay their arrival, staff recommended targeting off-peak hours. The official site warns that wait times in the first 36 hours of the festival are expected to be 5 hours or longer, so Burners should pack water and snacks for the ride.
Traffic reports indicated that on all days but opening night, the shortest lines are usually in the early morning hours, generally from 3 a.m.-10 a.m. Officials also urged travelers to maintain a strict 10 mph speed limit on Gate Road, and noted that once Burners reach the gate, their vehicles are searched and their entry tickets are checked. The gate can close due to inclement weather.
