What caused the flooding on Willeston Street?

The incident was caused by a private leak at 22 Willeston St, rather than a failure in the public network, according to a Wellington Water spokesperson. Wellington Water crews successfully shut off the valve at 5:45 am, and water was isolated shortly after.

The Snap Fitness gym on Willeston St is closed “until further notice” after the burst main “flooded the gym,” according to a post on the gym’s social media. 1News reported that the gym was closed as a result of the burst. While the leak is currently limited to one building, a Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson stated that “there are multiple businesses in the premises” that are being affected.

Fire and Emergency NZ deployed three crews to the scene to assist with portable pumps while waiting for the council to isolate the main.

In previous instances, pipe bursts in the area have resulted in flooded streets and affected water supplies.
