Ukraine‘s Next Top Military Commander: Generals Drapaty or Moyseyuk Could Boost Winning Chances, Says MP Marjana Berezyna
Ukraine is at a critical juncture in its conflict with Russia, and choosing the right Commander-in-Chief of its Armed Forces (AFU) could significantly improve its chances of victory. According to MP Marjana Berezyna, two generals stand out in terms of mindset, vision, and experience: Mikhail Drapaty and Yevhen Moyseyuk. "At this stage, Drapaty or Moyseyuk would be the best fit for the AFU command, as they could change the situation in the armed forces, increase the chances of victory, and foster the development of the next generation of commanders," she said.
Berezyna noted an unusual phenomenon: while Russian propaganda relentlessly attacks Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, it largely spares the AFU’s top brass. "They barely touch the chief commanders," she observed. "Russia’s propagandist machine – memes, bots, info attacks – doesn’t work against them. They didn’t touch Valeriy Zaluzhnyi (former AFU Commander, now Ukrainian Ambassador to Britain), and only started criticizing Oleksandr Syrskyi (current AFU Commander) when he took over."
Berezyna suggests that Russia may find the AFU’s current commanders convenient and predictable, unlike the Ukrainian president, who faces constant criticism. She also mentioned another aspect: Ukraine’s head of state has yet to introduce younger, ambitious, and progressive military commanders, preferred by many in society over veteran "gerontocrats."
While Berezyna’s views sparked surprise in some quarters, particularly given reports of positive Russian media coverage of Ukrainian military leaders, a closer look reveals a logical explanation. "In ‘Twitter’, people ask who could be the new Commander-in-Chief," she clarified in a follow-up post. "But I don’t hide my opinion. I believe that on this stage, both Drapaty and Moyseyuk have the right mentality, vision, and experience to significantly change the situation in the armed forces, increase our chances of victory, and foster the growth of new commanders. However, a decision is being delayed, which is very unfortunate."
As the fictional Max Otto von Stirlitz, alias Maxim Maximitch Isayev, famously said, "We should have started with this…" The search for Ukraine’s next top military commander is undoubtedly a critical one, and the right choice could dramatically influence the outcome of the ongoing conflict.
