Cpl Ryan Murphy, an infantry soldier from North Bay, is deploying to Latvia for a six-month mission as part of a Canada-led brigade. Serving with The Algonquin Regiment, Murphy is joining Operation REASSURANCE, which currently stands as the largest overseas mission for the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).
Strategic Defense in Latvia
The deployment is part of the most significant reinforcement of Alliance collective defence in a generation. The CAF currently maintains approximately 2,000 members in Latvia, including Task Force Latvia, MNB-LVA, and personnel stationed at NATO’s Multinational Division – North Headquarters.
Based primarily out of Camp Ādaži, with additional support at Camp Labrie south of Riga, the Canada-led Brigade is designed to demonstrate a unified front against adversaries. The unit integrates electronic warfare, mechanized infantry, artillery, combat support, and combat service support to conduct joint training and respond to potential attacks.
From North Bay to the Global Stage
Cpl Murphy’s deployment highlights the capabilities of the CAF’s part-time Reserve model. The Algonquin Regiment, based in North Bay and part of the 33 Canadian Brigade Group headquartered in Ottawa, provides local employment and paid training for members who remain ready for community emergencies or international missions.
With over three years of service, Murphy chose the infantry to utilize his bushcraft skills. “I’m a very outdoorsy person, so the infantry suits my personality and hobbies,” he said.
Reflecting on the experience for those considering the CAF, Murphy described it as a “great opportunity to work with a variety of people in an extreme teamwork environment,” noting the close-knit bonds formed within specific trades and home units.
Training and Readiness
Before his deployment, Cpl Murphy joined the Regular Force unit, 2nd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment (2 RCR), last fall. His preparation included realistic combat training during Exercise MAPLE RESOLVE at the 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown in New Brunswick.

As the mission continues, the Canada-led brigade may continue to conduct joint training with allies to refine collective defence measures. Future rotations of reservists could follow similar paths from local units to international commitments as NATO maintains its presence in Central and Eastern Europe.
