Russia Reintegration Upends Junior World Championship Schedule
The International Ice Hockey Federation instructed the Norwegian Ice Hockey Federation to implement necessary measures to reintegrate Russia into the upcoming U20 World Championship, nrk.no reported. That directive follows a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Oct. 30, which ruled that the Russian Ice Hockey Federation must be allowed to participate in IIHF tournaments with immediate effect. Norway, ranked as the tenth and lowest-seeded nation among those initially qualified for the tournament in Canada, now faces relegation to Division 1A as Russia takes its place as the tenth-ranked team.
Petter Salsten, general secretary and sports director of the Norwegian Ice Hockey Federation, confirmed to Dagbladet that the updated tournament schedule places the team into a completely different tier. Instead of facing opponents like Canada, Czechia, Switzerland, and Latvia in Edmonton and Red Deer, the Norwegian squad must prepare for Division 1A matches against Hungary, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Austria in Budapest. That alternate tournament is scheduled to run from Dec. 6 to Dec. 12, forcing the team to scrap plans for the competition in Canada beginning Dec. 26.
Swiss Team Refuses to Play Against Russia
The sudden overhaul has triggered sharp criticism from sports commentators and officials alike.

Opposition to the CAS ruling extends beyond Norway. The Swiss Ice Hockey Federation announced that while it will travel to Canada for the tournament, its team refuses to play against Russia.
Belarus Remains Banned From Upcoming IIHF Tournaments
While the international federation moves to accommodate the ruling on Russia, it maintains its ban on Belarus. vg.no reported that the IIHF rejected an appeal from the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation regarding participation in both the 2027 World Championship and the 2027 U20 World Championship. The IIHF disciplinary committee concluded there was no legal basis to order an immediate reintegration for Belarus, citing existing operational plans, ticket sales, and tournament structures.
