Castilla y León Strengthens Annual Flu Vaccination Campaign with Purchase of Additional 15,000 Doses

The Regional Government has approved a expenditure of €202,800 for the purchase of an additional 15,000 doses of Fluad Tetra flu vaccine, specifically for the elderly population over 60 years old, or for those aged 50 and above with health risks. This move aims to bolster the annual vaccination campaign led by the Regional Ministry of Health.

With this purchase, the total number of doses acquired reaches 770,410. The vaccines are inactivated, produced from viruses grown in embryonated eggs, and contain 15 micrograms of hemagglutinin from each included strain, with an adjuvant. Seqirus Spain is the sole provider of these types of vaccines, hence the procurement process will be conducted through a negotiated procedure without prior notice due to exclusivity.

Castilla y León’s health programs encompass the Official Vaccination and Immunization Calendar throughout one’s life, as well as specific vaccination campaigns. Vaccination is deemed the most effective strategy for preventing infectious diseases, necessitating continuous action to ensure the widest possible coverage.

Influenza is a significant public health concern due to its direct and indirect mortality, complications, and economic and social costs. Vaccination is the most effective measure to prevent influenza and its complications, particularly for those at higher risk of severe illness if infected.

The flu vaccination campaign primarily targets those most likely to develop complications from the flu, and those who may transmit the disease to others at high risk of complications, as per the recommendations for at-risk groups.
