Article:
Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, detained in Iran since October, is reported to be held in harsh conditions without a bed, sparking outrage and increased international pressure for her immediate release.
Sala, a reporter for the Italian news agency Adnkronos, was arrested on suspicion of espionage while covering protests in Tehran. Her arrest has been widely condemned by international human rights bodies and European governments, who have called for her release.
Italian government officials have stepped up their demand for Sala’s release, with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni urging Iran to "act immediately" and expressing concern about Sala’s health and wellbeing. "It’s time to bring Italy’s Ambassador back from Tehran," Meloni tweeted, in a sign of escalating diplomatic tensions.
The European Union has also intensified efforts to secure Sala’s release, with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell urging Iran to respect basic human rights. "The European Union stands united in its request for her immediate release and urges Iran to respect human rights," Borrell said in a statement.
Estonia’s Prime Minister Kaja Kallas also weighed in, urging Iran to free Sala and condemning her detention as a violation of press freedom. "We strongly condemn the detention of @CeciliaSala and autres and call on Iran to free them immediately," Kallas tweeted. "Journalism is not a crime."
Sala has reportedly been held in harsh conditions, with fellow detainees describing her cell as "inhumane" and lacking basic amenities such as a bed. In a letter smuggled out of prison, Sala wrote that she was forced to sleep on the floor and had been denied access to her eyeglasses and packages sent to her by her family.
Human rights organizations have expressed grave concern over Sala’s detention and Treatment, with some alleging that her arrest may be politically motivated. "Detention should not be used as a tool for silencing journalists," said Agnes Callamard, Secretary-General of Amnesty International.
As international pressure mounts, Iran has yet to provide any official updates on Sala’s case. Her arrest comes amidst growing tensions between Iran and the West over Tehran’s nuclear program and increasing civilian unrest in the country.
