A Nation United in Remembrance: Ceremonies, Exhibitions, and Special Publications Commemorate the Tragic Events of January 2015
Article:
Ten years ago, on January 7, 8, and 9, 2015, France was struck by a series of terrorist attacks that shook the nation to its core. The enemies of freedom targeted Charlie Hebdo, a symbol of free speech, and Hyper Cacher, a kosher grocery store, taking the lives of 17 people and leaving 22 injured. This week, France pauses to honor the victims and pay tribute to their memory.
Célébrations Nationales
The nation’s leaders will gather on Tuesday, January 7, to commence the formal commemorations. At 11:30 a.m., President Emmanuel Macron, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, government members, and local officials will congregate at the former offices of Charlie Hebdo on Rue Nicolas-Appert. The ceremony will continue at Boulevard Richard-Lenoir, where policeman Ahmed Merabet lost his life, and finally at Porte de Vincennes, where the Hyper Cacher attack occurred. A plaque will be unveiled, a wreath laid, and a moment of silence observed—all in the name of remembrance and unity.
On Wednesday, the city of Montrouge will hold a tribute to Clermont-Jouany, the police municipal officer killed by Amedy Coulibaly.
Partout dans la Région Occitanie
In Occitanie, a host of events will unfolding throughout the week, including an exhibition of drawings entitled Border line on the parvis of the Hôtel de Région in Montpellier. Nightly projections will illuminate the building until January 11, showcasing images and caricatures that immortalize the tragic events. Similar projections will take place on the facade of the Hôtel de Région in Toulouse.
A train departing from Montpellier’s Saint-Roch station on January 8 will carry caricaturists, aiming to raise public awareness of the importance of this artistic discipline. The train will arrive in Toulouse, where another commemorative event is planned.
In Montpellier, an exhibition titled "I am Charlie" will be unveiled on the Hôtel de Ville’s parvis at 1:30 p.m. on January 7, featuring 15 photographs and a special poster designed by Man, a well-known Montpellier-based political cartoonist.
Un numéro spécial de Charlie Hebdo
In keeping with tradition, Charlie Hebdo marks the anniversary with a special edition. The 32-page issue will include winning entries from the #RireDeDieu international cartoon competition. Available in newsstands starting today, the edition serves as a testament to the magazine’s unwavering commitment to freedom of expression.
As France commemorates the victims of the January 2015 attacks, it stands resolute in its defense of liberty and honoring those who were lost. Through unity and remembrance, France ensures that their sacrifice was not in vain.
