Rob Reiner received a posthumous Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance in The Bear, nine months after his death. The victory was announced on Sunday night at the Television Academy ceremony held at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater.

Reiner won for his role as Albert Schnurr, a business mentor and restaurant franchiser who advises line cook Ebraheim, played by Edwin Lee Gibson, on expanding the sandwich window on the FX and Hulu comedy-drama series The Bear. Reiner did a three-episode arc in the show’s fourth season, a role he accepted after being encouraged by fellow guest star Jamie Lee Curtis.
Presenter Wendi McLendon-Covey accepted the honor on Reiner’s behalf, telling the crowd, We all wish he were here,
according to Yahoo. The announcement prompted a heartfelt, minute-long standing ovation from the audience, with Curtis among those paying tribute in the room.
Reiner prevailed in a category that included Michael J. Fox and Brett Goldstein for Shrinking, Hamish Linklater for Widow’s Bay, Christopher McDonald for Hacks, and Connor Storrie for Saturday Night Live.

The win marks Reiner’s third career Emmy Award, following two previous victories in 1974 and 1978 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his signature role as Michael Meathead

The 48-year gap between his 1978 win and his 2026 victory shatters the record for the longest span between acting Emmy wins. He broke the previous record of 37 years held by his own father, Carl Reiner, who won his first Emmy in 1958 for Caesar’s Hour and followed it with a guest comedy Emmy in 1995 for Mad About You. Furthermore, Rob Reiner is the first posthumous Emmy winner in an acting category since Raúl Julia won in 1995 for The Burning Season.
Legacy and Context of Tragic Death
Best known as an acclaimed actor and filmmaker, Reiner directed classic movies including This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, and A Few Good Men. The Bear also included a tribute to Reiner in its season finale, where Ebraheim ended a phone call with Albert by saying As you wish,
referencing the famous line from The Princess Bride.
Reiner’s victory carried heavy emotional significance due to the circumstances surrounding his death. Prosecutors state that Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were killed inside their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025, after suffering multiple sharp-force injuries. Authorities arrested their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, near the University of Southern California hours later.
Nick Reiner remains jailed without bail at Los Angeles’ Twin Towers Correctional Facility after being charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty and denied special-circumstance allegations of multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait, with a pretrial hearing scheduled for September 15.
